Name That General #5

1. I was an only child.
2. I moved to Huntsville in April 1963 from Wichita, Kansas.
3. I went to Davis Hills in 9^th grade and Lee 10^th through 12^th.
4. Favorite teachers were Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Nelson, Ms. Faulkner, Mrs. Ange.
5. My favorite classes were home economics, typing, bookkeeping.
6. I worked in the library. 
7. Hobbies then:  Loved to sew (made most of my clothes in HS) and cook. 
8. I was in G.A.A., Pep Club, Home Economics Club, and Morning Watch.
9. In 10^th grade I rode the bus; 11^th and 12^th my dad took me in the morning and my mom would pick me up or I would get someone in my neighborhood to take me home.
10. I went to church with the same guy I dated in the 11^th grade. 
11. My mother would not let me have friends come to the house, so I made sure I didn’t get too friendly with other girls who might want to come over.
12. I made friends with different girls in my classes.
13. My best guy friends were mainly who I was dating at the time.
14. I went to Calhoun and then to Athens College.
15. I dated a guy named Phil, then dated and married his best friend.
16. Went  to the prom with Larry Myrick in the 12th grade.

I was glad to see Tim Lull's email and plans for a Class of '67 reunion. It was nice seeing Tim at our reunion and he and I talked quite a bit through out the weekend. Your efforts at keeping this web page going I know inspires many of the other Lee Classes to keep up and renew old ties.

I found this picture of Tim (R) and Larry Snead if you have room to use it. You said you like to get pictures !

The fact that many Lee graduates from later classes attend our reunions is just one of many events that take place that make the reunions so special. Not sure if it was last year's reunion or a previous one but Greg Patterson came Saturday night to the dance and sat at our table for a while. It had been a long time since I had seen Greg, probably since ours days at Florence State. 

Our fantastic re-union committee has certainly established the Bench Mark for how a reunion should be organized and run and I wish Tim and the class of 67 all the best for September 2012. Who knows? Maybe Jennifer and I will show up.

NAME THAT GENERAL #4

This OLD General felt like no one knew him in high school and that no one would ever be able to figure out who he is. I'm counting on the collective memories of the Class of '67 to prove him wrong.

• Was Terri Brasher's lab partner when she was a sophomore.
• Played baseball his sophomore year.
•  Rode the bus with Max Kull, Lee Stroud and Mike Smoot. 
• Was friends with Margaret Van Dyke, Stephen Clinkenbeard, Pat Lacey, Phil Holland, Skeebo Williams, Mike Smoot and Bob Owen. 
• Didn't date in HS. 
• Didn't go to the prom, 
• Didn't have a car till college.
• Got off the bus at Mike Smoot's house and spent the afternoon playing guitars.
• Playing those guitars led to my current rock and roll career.
• In 1971 I went to New York and was a manager at Hardee's.
• I live in VA now.
•  When I'm in Atlanta, I'm lead singer and lead guitar player for a classic rock cover band.

Classmate Janet James-Holland, a piano, organ, and voice teacher, has a 6'1" Baldwin Grand Piano that Lee's music department believes would be a tremendous asset to their program. Although Janet has generously agree to sell the piano for less than its appraised value,  neither the music department nor Huntsville City Schools has the money ($15,000-$20,000) to purchase the piano.  If you are interested in donating money to the "LHS Piano Fund" for the current and future students at Lee, please contact Janet by phone

The latest 'Name That General' stumped everyone! I have no idea how I did it, but Gin Lum Chin (Jimmy) was found alive and well in New Jersey. If, like me, you didn't know Jimmy back then, you'll get a second chance next year to get to know a great 'Old General'.

I stared at his face in the annual. Nothing. I had never seen him before. One guy out of 307 million Americans--how in the world was I going to find him? I tried a phone number for someone with the same name. The wife answered, listened to my story, and insisted that her husband had never been to Huntsville, AL. Then the daughter got on the phone. Oh yeah, he was the right guy. 

• In Huntsville, lived with his brother who worked with Brown Engineering and NASA.
•   Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Penelope Moore. "I loved her southern accent and she helped me a lot."
• Went to the prom with Janet James who played the piano for the choir..
• Some of his friends were Dickie Cobb, Phyllis Brock,  Leonard Horton and his good friend Steven Clinkenbeard.
• Moved to Huntsville from New York City
• Attended UAH, majored in EE (was there only 2 Qs)
• After UAH, moved back to New York City for family reasons
• Drafted... Served four years in the US Air Force, had two tours of overseas duty...
• Used the GI bill, attended Old Dominion University....
• Graduated with an EE degree...worked for the Department of the Army/Navy for 36 years.
• Recently retired.
• Now work as Mr. Mom, taking care of the house and all the cooking, cleaning, not to mentioned the yard works.....
• Is Chinese-American

Congratulations to John Esslinger Class of 1967

This is one in a daily series of profiles on the incoming class of the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. The class will be inducted at a banquet on Monday, April 18 at the Von Braun Center.

John Esslinger had 41 state championship as track coach

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Ever since his high school days at Lee High School of Huntsville in the mid-1960s, John Robert Esslinger seemed destined to make a big name for himself in the related sports of track and cross country. And he certainly did.

It began when Esslinger was a young prep athlete at Lee, where he showed early promise as a runner. He eventually fulfilled his potential as a senior in 1967 by becoming a sectional champion in both the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard high hurdles - still a school record.

"I remember the first race that I won," Esslinger says. "I didn't win any until I was a senior. I had worked hard every day on my hurdling, and didn't realize how fast I had become. I was so surprised to be out in front that I almost stopped. I'll never forget that feeling."

But in the years to come, it was in the realm of coaching in neighboring Jackson County where John Esslinger made his indelible mark. Following graduation from Lee in 1967 and Jacksonville State University in 1971, Esslinger went to Scottsboro, serving eight years as a teacher and assistant coach in football and track.

After a break from coaching in the early 1980s, Esslinger was named head track and cross country coach at Scottsboro High School in 1985, where he quickly became known as a man who would give the unlikely athlete a chance to succeed in something other than football or basketball.

The results speak volumes. In 21 years as head coach of cross country and track and field at Scottsboro, Esslinger has produced 41 state championship teams - nine in boys cross country from 1971 through 2008, 16 in girls cross country from 1992 through 2009 (including nine in a row from 2001-2009), five in boys indoor track (2001-2005), three in girls indoor track (2001-2003), four in boys outdoor track (2002-2005), and four in girls outdoor track from 1997 through 2003. Those teams totaled nearly 100 individual state champions.

"As a coach, my first state championship in 1991 was special," recalls Esslinger. "My son Rob was one of the captains of that team."

Among his many honors, Esslinger was named Citizen of the Year for Jackson County in 1999 and Coach of the Year for the National Federation's Southern Region in 2000. He also served on the Alabama High School Athletic Association's influential Cross Country Committee from 2008-2010.

Esslinger, son of the Margaret Esslinger and the late Bill Esslinger, was born Oct. 2, 1949, in Little Rock, Ark. He and his family moved to Madison County in 1952. Esslinger and his wife Betty will have been married 40 years next month. Their son Rob is now a mechanical engineer at Redstone Arsenal, and their other son, Tom, is a coach and teacher at Homewood High School in Birmingham.

Richard Young, formerly known as "Deceased"

You can imagine my surprise when Old General classmate Richard Harrison Young, deceased, friended me on Facebook. To paraphrase Mark Twain, "The news of his death had been greatly exaggerated."

My condolences to the family of Richard Harrison Young who really is deceased.

Lunch with Jim Peters

Gay and I were visiting friends from New York who were vacationing in North Myrtle Beach, SC. The reunion contact list provided me with contact info for Jim Peters who lived five miles from where we were staying. This picture is Tim Lull and Jim Peters at the Boardwalk Beach Cafe. Name That General #2

I hate to tell you that there is a winner in the Name That General #2. Pam Taylor (in one hour and eight minutes) correctly named Penny Lenoir-Sumners as the one who 'went over to the DARK SIDE' by becoming first an Assistant Principal and then Principal at Lee before retiring. Pam was followed four hours later by Stella Beasley-Wilson with the correct answer. Check back in a few days for Name That General #3. I'll try to make this one a little more difficult.

This Old General was beloved in high school; then she went over to the dark side. She became the very thing that we feared most as teens.

Name That General #1

And the winner of the first NAME THAT GENERAL is Steve Sumners (followed by Pam Taylor and then Bill Johnson) who correctly identified James (Jim) Peters. Jim is currently living in Ocean Isle, NC. I will be having lunch with Jim in a couple of weeks and will post some pictures here. Watch in the next several days for NAME THAT GENERAL #2.

April 2010 had been one of the most difficult times in his life; his leg had been amputated below the knee. But now, after months of rehab with an artificial leg, he was on his way to Las Vegas and Texas Hold'em. And he intended to win.

He checked into the Luxor and found his way to the tables. Before long, he was dealt an ace-high flush; he thought he was unbeatable. He looked around the table at the five other players and realized that he would be the last to bet. When the dealer finally called on him to place his bet, he pushed all of his chips to the center of the table and said, “I'm all in!"

Then, he reached under the table, grabbed his already loosened prosthetic leg, tossed it onto the table and declared, "And I mean ALL IN!"

No one could beat that hand—and leg!
